Squarespace and personal agents: why URL mappings no longer do it, and the Cloudflare route Free & Pro

Why a Squarespace URL mapping no longer makes a site discoverable under the Personal Agent Protocol, the Cloudflare Worker route, and what a provider can do for the site.

Updated October 20, 2026

Squarespace hosts everything, and a site owner’s only tools for the web server are the ones in Settings. One of those, URL mappings, can send a path to another website with a 301, which until 16 October 2026 was what the Personal Agent Protocol allowed for its discovery file. Since that date the document must be served on the site’s own domain, a redirect to a provider no longer counts, and Squarespace cannot proxy a path, so the route is Cloudflare in front of the domain. Facts are as of 16 October 2026. Agent Adapt is a WooCommerce plugin and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Squarespace, Sierra or Meta.

What Squarespace can do

A Squarespace site cannot serve a file at /.well-known/poppy.json: there is no file upload to the root of the domain. It cannot proxy the path either.

URL mappings. Under Settings → Developer tools → URL mappings (the location in Squarespace’s current interface; it has moved before), a line can send a path to another website with a 301. Until 16 October 2026 a mapping from /.well-known/poppy.json to a provider’s address was the thing to try. The protocol now says the document speaks for the host that serves it after any redirects, so an agent that followed the mapping would get a document for the provider’s host, not yours. Whether Squarespace applies mappings under /.well-known/ no longer matters: do not use one for this path.

Cloudflare in front. If your domain’s DNS is on Cloudflare with the proxy on, a Cloudflare Worker answers the path before Squarespace does and serves the provider’s document on your domain, whatever Squarespace reserves; the site stays on Squarespace. Squarespace sells and manages domains itself, and many sites use Squarespace’s DNS; moving DNS to Cloudflare is possible but is a change to make with care, and Squarespace’s documentation on third-party DNS is the place to start. The Worker is in Serving poppy.json with a Cloudflare Worker.

What a provider can do for a Squarespace site

The Worker serves the document of a hosted Company that runs the issuer and the agent API for your domain. For a Squarespace shop, the provider reads your products and policies from your public pages or through Squarespace’s Commerce APIs where your plan allows, lets an agent search and build a cart, and hands the customer to your Squarespace checkout to pay. For a Squarespace site that is not a shop (a studio, a restaurant, a practice, a consultancy), the useful thing is a Company Agent: the protocol’s conversation channel, where a customer’s assistant asks questions and your side answers from your site’s content, with a handoff to a person when it should. See Services and bookings.

Agent Adapt’s hosted Company for sites that cannot run its plugin, with the Company Agent for sites that are not shops, is built and running, in early access by email, and not yet on sale. Ask at [email protected], and tell us it is a Squarespace site.

What to do this month

  1. Fetch https://your-site.com/.well-known/poppy.json and note what Squarespace answers.
  2. There is nothing to set up at Cloudflare until you have a provider’s hosted document address, so that comes first.
  3. Make sure your returns, shipping, terms and privacy pages, or for a service business your prices, hours and booking rules, are on public pages in text. That is what any provider will read and quote.

Common questions

Can I put the JSON in a code block or code injection?

No. Code injection adds markup to your pages; it cannot make a new path at the root of the domain answer with JSON, and the protocol needs that exact path.

Does Squarespace have its own AI agent support?

Not that we can cite for this protocol as of this page’s date. If Squarespace implements it at the platform level, every site gets it without any of the above, and we will update this page.

Would the agent see my Squarespace checkout?

The agent hands the customer a link to it. Under the protocol’s current draft the customer pays; agents have no way to.

Is Agent Adapt available for Squarespace?

Not as a plugin; Squarespace has no plugins. The hosted Company is built and running, in early access by email, and not yet on sale. The WooCommerce plugin is the only product you can download today.
