Which accounts can connect to an agent Free

Only customer accounts can be connected to a personal agent. Staff and administrator accounts are refused, at sign-in and on every request.

Updated October 12, 2026

Agent Adapt connects only customer accounts to agents. An account can be connected when:

  • its role is Customer or Subscriber; and
  • it has none of the capabilities that run a store or a site: managing WooCommerce or orders, editing posts or pages, managing users, plugins, themes or settings, importing or exporting.

Administrator and shop manager accounts are refused. If someone tries, the approval page says This account can’t be connected and asks them to sign in with their customer account instead.

Checked on every request

Eligibility isn’t only checked at sign-in. It’s checked again on every request an agent makes. If a connected customer is later promoted to a staff role, or given a store-management capability, their agent connections end and further requests are refused.

If you also shop at your own store

Use a separate customer account for your own shopping. Your administrator account can’t be connected to an agent, by design: an agent with access to it could reach your whole store.

For developers

The filters agentadapt_eligible_roles (default: customer, subscriber) and agentadapt_ineligible_caps change the rule. Widen it with care: any capability you allow, a connected agent’s customer has while the agent acts for them.
